two weeks ago today...

I labored all day...and then the clock struck 1am...

and this sweet bundle arrived.
funny thing is, as hard as I try, I can't remember what all those contractions felt like. POOF! just like that. gone from my memory.

handmade beginnings: a project + a giveaway

Hello, Friends

Many of you have already heard about Anna Maria Horner's new book, Handmade Beginnings: 24 Sewing Projects to Welcome Baby. I had certainly seen it around a lot before I was fortunate enough to get my paws on a copy. Of course I only had enough time to complete one of the many sweet projects featured before Felix arrived and everything got very busy (no time for sewing when I can snuggle a 12 day old baby!). However, I have bookmarked several future projects I want to give a whirl as soon as I find the time...not sure when that will be.

As I flipped through this lovely book for the first time, I wasn't sure which project to start with, but in the end I decided to make the little sleep sack first because I was looking for something that would work for either a boy or a girl.  Being the rebel that I am, I didn't do the patchwork part of the project -- I had some fabric I really wanted to use and I just went with it. After getting over a couple of instances of pregnancy brain when reading the directions, everything was really easy to follow. Felix is of course still too small to model his funky new sleep sack for you, but he will be sporting it soon enough and I promise to snap a photo. Here it is waiting for him in his nursery.

 

Cute, eh? Perfect for little kicky legs, too.

Happy Father's Day

Dustin and Felix have already decided they love one another to the moon and back. D thinks Felix is quite possibly the sweetest and most handsome baby he has ever laid eyes on, and I'm getting the impression that Felix thinks his Dad has the coziest chest to nap upon, especially in the early morning hours, as well as a very soothing singing voice that belts out the best songs -- everything from Simon and Garfunkel to Neutral Milk Hotel!

Happy 1st Father's Day to my boys!

The Bug has arrived!

Our lovely baby boy, Felix Augustus, arrived during the wee hours of June 12^th, which just so happened to be a new moon.  So it's no surprise that he's pure magic (and has the best head of hair that we've ever laid eyes on).

We're all doing great, exploring our new shared world and loving every second of it -- at this point, even the screams are strangely captivating and beautiful.

There are plans to be back in this space with more photos and words in a few days. For now, rest and endless amounts of eye-gazing.

: 40 weeks :

 

June 10th is finally here. I've been thinking about this date for months now as it marks my 40th week of pregnancy. 40 whole weeks...man, oh man...I can hardly believe it! But, like so many other babies, Junebug is not quite ready to make an appearance on the official due date, something we aren't too surprised about (we have graphs, remember?)

And, even though Dustin and I have had today's date circled and/or highlighted on every calendar and planner in our possession, we're flexible and we know we'll meet our Bug very soon. We're ready. Until then, lots of naps, long walks (er, waddles), house tidying, popsicle making, reading, movie watching, and more than anything, just being together with these goofy ear-to-ear grins we can't seem to remove from our faces.

things I like: pretty flowers with names like pincushion

Some sweet friends got me the most lovely bouquet of flowers. I can't get over how cool those pincushion flowers are up close. So Pretty.

before and after: nursery table

Okay, so this little re-do isn't the most exciting project I have ever done (and the photos could be better), but the table was free (a curb-side find given to me by my sweet neighbors) and it is the perfect size for storing whatever it is that I will need next to the glider. For weeks, I had been looking around thrift stores and antique stores for a little table and nothing even remotely decent was showing up, so getting this one for free was right up my alley.

Before:

A sanded down curb-side find. Missing a drawer.

After:

I removed the drawer rail and screws and painted the whole thing (inside and out) a steely gray. I thought about adding some hand painted details, but opted against that to cut down on it being too busy. For now it holds just a few things until I determine what the necessary essentials one needs next to a glider really are.
