A chilly walk with my boys next to the Eno River. Morning hikes are the best -- something I hope to do more of in 2012.

we've been trying to take in some of the best things about Philadelphia before we hit the road in, um, just under three weeks. we had a great time exploring the grounds and introducing our little guy to some mighty fine trees. I was in such a terrible mood before going. luckily, the whole scene helped me move into a much better space...at least for the afternoon. ugh...being a grump is no fun.
anyway, if you live nearby, please go visit sometime soon. there is plenty of shade to be had.

We're back from the beach. Felix approved, well, mostly. He didn't love it when wet sand stuck to his hands, but that's pretty understandable. I'm not a fan of that either. We had a great time introducing him to the sea.

snaps from the weekend

I had a wonderful Mother's Day with my two favorite boys. They treated me to breakfast and a trip out of the city to one of my favorite spots -- Terrain. We also made a trip to a local orchard for a picnic and some petting zoo fun for Felix. He wasn't sure about the ostriches and the billy goats, but he seemed very keen on all the hens, ducks, sweet little lambs, and last but not least, the pigs. That boy has farming in his blood.

In addition to all the fun out and about, I was also able to do a bit of gardening. Several of my succulents were repotted and given fresh soil. Our radishes are coming right along out there too -- looking forward to slicing one up and sprinkling it with a little sea salt sometime soon.

a little dose of Spring

Hi there,

I hope you had a nice weekend. We did and still are due to the President's Day holiday today. These last few weeks our family has been missing warm weather (c'mon Spring!), so we took a trip to a nearby indoor garden yesterday. It was wonderful to walk among the flowers and introduce Felix to some amazing things his little eyes had never seen before, like staghorn ferns and giant hibiscus flowers and venus fly traps! We wanted to tack on a trip to Terrain afterward, but, as you can see below, someone got very sleepy and it wasn't in the cards this time.

During our vacation last week, I lead an arts and crafts retreat for teenagers ages 13 to 17 at the summer camp I have been co-directing for the last seven years. It was a super good time and so wonderful to connect with some old and new friends. Myself and a few other teachers shared skills like printmaking and woodworking (we built our own shadowboxes!). In addition, I spent a lot of time talking about putting your message out into the world and why we create the things we do and how those things make an impact. And one day we had the good fortune to be visited by some inspiring peeps from Brooklyn who shared several amazing projects they are involved in. Wow. Double Wow.

Above is one of the installations we created for the entire camp to see and participate in. It's a wish tree and by the end of the week it was full of amazing wishes left by campers. There were a few other retreats taking place the same week and it was lovely to know that the entire community wanted to take part. I wish you could have seen it up close.

fancy pants

While on vacation we attended our first wedding as a family of three. It was a sweet Quaker wedding held on a beautiful farm in the hudson river valley. Felix wore a hilarious tuxedo onesie (I couldn't resist) and did a darn good job holding it together during the entire affair. Good times.

After a wonderful week in the woods, we are settling back in here at home. Felix was such a trooper on his first vacation. D and I had a great time as well and even learned some valuable lessons about packing for a trip with a baby -- a little bit of everything is required, and if it's too hot in the city to wear socks, it doesn't mean they won't be needed in the country. A couple of weeks remain before school starts...ugh...and things get a bit more complicated. It has been an amazing summer!

Have a great weekend. We're off to the Hudson River Valley for a week-long vacation. Ahhhh...I cannot wait for our little family to get out of this hot city. I'll say hello and show some photos once we return.
